Round and Up February
Posted on 02.21.06 by Mike K @ 12:11 pm

Snorting the yellow snow again are we Snowy?Dude! There’s like, this site. And it has something to do with tunnels, or tunneling. Boy, I could tell you stories of tunneling. But they’re so amazing, they’d blow the minds of my 5 readers. The problem is I’d then have to acquire a new reader base. I can’t have that. Especially with the likes of Jack Black and Bob Villa reading. Their fans would kill me.

Right, so the more temporally correct but logically wrong February Round Up is online. Can you believe it? People mistakening the round up’s as horribly late or something. So, for the sanity of the readers then, they’re now being branded with the month of their release. Madness I say.

Nothing big this month, but a few interesting ones. A pipe based throw back to The Incredible Machine, Tube Twist. A defensive RTS like game, Tower Defense. A typing tutor SHMUP, TypeStrike XE. And the most unexpected of them all, a wrestling game. That and a fair share of match 3’s, simple item grabbing platformers, and an Arkanoid just to prove the hate never dies.

Visit the Tunnel and learn all about the act of tunneling.

December’s Round Up of the Odd
Posted on 01.26.06 by Mike K @ 7:59 am

Yes, your monthly dose of round uppage is online.

After having many great games these past few round up’s, it was expected things would cool down. This month has some cool stuff, but nothing that’s going to pull a Weird Words or such on you. The Mastermind being my favorite of the month, despite it being depressingly buggy. This followed by the funky physics motorcycle game Motorama, some addiction to Egypt with Egyptian Addiction, and a healthy dose of shooting and space games, and some Arkanoids for good measure.

Visit GameTunnel and check it out.

2005 Games in Review
Posted on 12.30.05 by Mike K @ 11:33 pm

Inspired by a discussion on Indie Gamer, and Game Tunnel’s end of year awards. Apparently it wasn’t clear, but us round up’ers were not involved in the end of year awards. So, to make up for it, I’m going to pick my favorites from the last year (December to November’s round up). I’m not going to rate them, just list them. Here we go.

MK’s 5 Indie Favorites of 2005
Weird Worlds - Oct 2005
Land of Legends - Nov 2005
UltraTron - June 2005
Mexican Motor Mafia - June 2005
Fate - July 2005

What can I say, these were all a blast to play. Weird Worlds, Land of Legends, and Fate were all extremely entertaining games. UltraTron has a style and mood to it I absolutely adore. Mexican Motor Mafia has a great soundtrack, and does good justice to an old favorite of mine, Death Rally. Great stuff.

MK’s 7 Favorite Oddities of 2005
Facade - July 2005
Magic Blackboard - June 2005
Virus - Sept 2005
Zzed - Jan 2005
Super Dudester - Dec 2004
Cute Knight - Oct 2005
Summer Schoolgirls - June 2005

And I just had to have a weird list. Facade has been praised all around, and I still dig it for what it is. Magic Blackboard has the space gator and blurry insanity to it that makes me smile. Virus is a simple game, maybe not all that great of a game, but it really struck a chord with me, and I have to approve. Zzed was a matching puzzle with a funky arcade shooter feel to it. It also had Ninja Turtle people. Yes! Super Dudester was the other PuppyGames great one that I think really deserves some attention. Formerly Super Elvis, but a really entertaining party sort of game. Cute Knight, an entertaining Princess Maker like RPG. And finally Summer Schoolgirls. It makes the list ’cause it’s concept of being a game about making friends boggles my mind.

And there we have it, my round up closure for the year. The competition is getting fiercer in the indie space, and the number of favorites from the 2nd half of the year really shows it. I’m looking forward to another great year.

November for Xmas
Posted on 12.24.05 by Mike K @ 11:18 am

The roundup for November is up, just in time for the big day December 25th. 10 again this time.

Many good games this month. Land of Legends, the fantasy strategy game in the top spot, followed by the wildlife park simulator Venture Africa, a hardcore space trading sim Flatspace II, an aquarium store simulator Fish Tycoon, and a slick little soccer player simulator New Star Soccer 3. Good stuff.

October Tunnels, MD
Posted on 11.26.05 by Mike K @ 6:50 pm

The round up for October is up, sporting the sexah new look for the Game Tunnel website. This month sees Russell joining the ranks of the illustrious panel, bringing us to 4. It also shows us taking a more reserved 10 game count, which I think we’ll be sticking with moving forward.

So, how was the month? Two games I really liked this month, Weird Worlds and Cute Knight. Just as I said in my review, and as the others agreed, Weird Worlds is great. I’m not big on many games built around randomly generated maps, but it works excellent here. Then there’s Cute Knight. A kwirky little RPG’ish game I got a kick out of. There was also the unique strategy game Kosumi. I really tried to enjoy this game, but it would have been too much of a commitment. Still, I think it was a good month.
